How I Got Started as a Wedding Officiant

In about 1994, I found out my oldest (and let's face it coolest) brother was a Minister of the Universal Life Church. I thought that was the coolest thing ever—and, like any good younger brother, I wanted to be just like him. There was something about it that sparked my curiosity. Could I do that too?

About 10 years later, I went online and got ordained. Simple as that. But what I didn’t expect was how that one small decision would open up a world of possibility.

I quickly discovered that as an ordained Minister, I was legally able to officiate weddings in almost every state across the U.S.

Shortly after that, I moved to a new state and started a new job. One day at work, I overheard a colleague talking about his upcoming wedding to a beautiful woman. He seemed a little lost—he had no idea how to find someone to officiate. Without hesitation, I raised my hand and said, “Well, let me find out how to do that. I'm an ordained Minister.”

That one moment changed everything. I learned then, in Minnesota, wedding officiants need to be registered in one of the state’s 87 counties. After a bit of research, I found that the easiest and closest county for me to register in was Anoka, MN. I filed the paperwork, got registered and stamped, and just like that—I was about to officiate my very first wedding.

And when I did, I felt something shift. I knew I was supposed to be doing this.

The couple was over the moon, and that wedding still stands out in my heart. In fact, 13 years, and two wonderful children later, they were more than happy to give me a glowing review. That kind of lasting connection reminds me why I started and why I keep going.

I love love. Whether I’m working with couples from the moment they get engaged or stepping in as a last-minute hero when their original officiant falls through, I feel honored every single time to be part of such a beautiful and intimate celebration. Being a wedding officiant isn’t just something I do—it’s something I was meant to do.
